[Tuxaloosa] Network Troubleshooting and Ethernet

I don't have a network diagram, unfortunately. My technical knowledge
is pretty limited. The modem (which as I understand it is a combination
cable modem and router) is an Arris TG1682G and is rented from Comcast.
The primary computer is running Linux Mint 17.2 (Rafaela) and is
connected directly to the modem via Ethernet cable. The secondary
computer is in an adjacent room and is running Linux Mint 18 (Sarah); it
is plugged into an Ethernet jack. A cable in the main room is plugged
into an Ethernet jack and then into the modem. The two computers are
probably twenty feet apart, so not a great distance. I tried replacing
all the Ethernet cables (though not the cable between the two jacks,
which is probably only about a foot long), but it made no difference.
The secondary computer only needs Internet access; the two computers
don't need access to each other. Internet is working fine on the
primary computer. The Internet connection on both computers was
originally set up automatically by Linux Mint. The trouble started when
Comcast required us to replace the previous modem (which I will admit
was pretty old, but worked fine), so I suspect the new modem may be the
cause of the problem, though of course the timing could be a
coincidence. Numerous calls to Comcast have not been productive; some
of the reps tried to be helpful, but they seem to have even less
technical knowledge than I do. I've also Googled extensively but have
not been able to solve the problem. I appreciate any suggestions.
The two computers are at my parents' house, so I don't have as much
access to them as I would if they were at my house, though I'm generally
at their house at least twice a day.
In addition, if anyone knows someone who would be interested in running
Ethernet cable at three houses, I would appreciate any referrals,
especially if the person involved can also troubleshoot Linux networks.
