[Tuxaloosa] install mysql in non-default location

ok... it looks like i've managed to botch things a bit. when i
/etc/init.d/mysql start
i get a failed message.
/var/log/syslog says:

so i assume that i need to change permissions on the new dirs and their 
contents.
is the mysql user just mysql? is there a group mysql?
should i #chown mysql:mysql new/dirs/ ?
is that a little broad sweeping?
